The effects of kidney failure on pregnancy

Women with kidney failure, who conceive and continue the pregnancy, are at significant risk for adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. Renal disease during pregnancy is relatively uncommon. Reviewing the available literature, it is difficult to define the exact incidence of chronic renal disease in pregnancy. Women with kidney disorder have mostly opted for hemodialysis and mostly suffer a high risk of complications during pregnancy such as miscarriage, stillbirth, preterm birth, and preeclampsia.

There are several possible reasons for why renal insufficiency is uncommonly associated with pregnancy. First and more common is the fact that many women with significant renal insufficiency or renal failure are either beyond childbearing age or infertile. Women who suffer from chronic kidney disease before pregnancy, it may increase the risk the growth of a child in the womb or can lead to chances of stillborn.
