How Kidney Disease Develops

Role of kidneys

The kidneys filter waste and excess water from the blood as urine. In addition, it also regulates blood production and maintains the water level in the body. A kidney disease causes the kidneys to wear out and lose its functional ability over time. An End-stage kidney disease (ESRD) is the final stage of kidney dysfunction. What are the various stages of GFR?

Kidney disease is usually progressive in nature. The length of all the stages varies and depends on how the kidney disease is treated especially in relation to the diet and further treatment. It takes almost 10 to 20 years for the kidney disease to reach the advanced stage and may not show symptoms otherwise. ESRD is the Stage 5 of the kidney disease which is measured by the glomerular filtration rate (GFR):

  • In stage 1 kidney disease is the GFR is equal or greater than 90 when kidney functions normally but a slight sign of kidney disease may appear
  • In stage 2 kidney disease is from 60-89 in which kidney function is slightly reduced
  • In stage 3 the GFR reaches from 45-59 and the kidney function is noticeably reduced
  • In stage 4 the GFR reaches to 15-29 and the kidney function is extremely reduced
  • In stage 5 the GFR is lowest and becomes less than 15 as it reaches the end stage of kidney failure

Reasons that cause the low GFR

There are many causes for kidney disease but some of the most common are Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. The other reasons for kidney disease are long-term blockage of the urinary tract by kidney stones, enlarged prostate or certain types of cancer. Glomerulonephritis is an inflammation of the filters and one of the major causes of kidney disease, polycystic kidney disease, nephrotic syndrome and congenital abnormalities. “Glomerular Filtration Rate Stages, Ayurvedic Treatment”.

Signs and symptoms

The symptoms of kidney disease mainly include low urine output, fluid disturbances in the body and electrolyte imbalance. Kidney disease may not show any signs of the initial symptoms. The other causes include increased urea in the blood, diarrhea, and vomiting which can lead to dehydration, weight loss, increased nocturnal urination, increased frequency or increased amounts of the urine and foamy or bubbly urine, typically with very pale color, decreased frequency and amounts with very dark colored urine. One can also experience blood in the urine, a sense of pressure and difficult urination is also indicative of advanced kidney disease. Glomerular Filtration Rate Stages, Ayurvedic Treatment”.
