Can Whey Protein Affect Your Kidneys

Whey protein is a famous dietary and fitness supplement, which is made from liquid called whey, after separating it from the milk during the cheese making process. The whey is then refined, filtered, and spray-dried into whey powder. It is a complete source of protein that contains all essential amino acids. Since your body is incapable of making the essential amino acids, it is important to include them in your diet. Past studies have shown that it can help you recover from exercise, build muscles and strength, and even aids in your weight loss journey, by reducing your appetite and boosting your metabolism. Can whey protein affect your kidneys?

There are three main types of whey protein (segregated on the basis of how they are processed). They are:

  • Whey Protein Concentrate: It contains almost 70-80 percent of protein. It has more lactose, fat, and minerals from the milk and is known to be the most common type of whey protein.
  • Whey Protein Isolate: It contains more than 90 percent of protein that has less lactose, less fat and very few beneficial minerals.
  • Whey Protein Hydrolysate: This form is predigested, and helps allow your body to absorb it faster.

However, it is not 100 percent risk-free, as increased consumption might also damage your kidneys.

Healthy Kidneys and Whey Protein

According to a study based on the University of Connecticut, known as “Dietary Protein Intake and Renal Function”, it has been concluded that there isn’t any concern for people with healthy kidneys, to consume high amounts of Whey Protein. But, studies have even shown that a high protein diet in those with kidney disease might further damage its functioning. Can whey protein affect your kidneys?

Thus, it can be concluded that there are no such restrictions or damage caused to a healthy person, with an increased protein intake; while on the other hand, it might further incapacitate the already damaged kidneys.

Can Whey Protein Affect Your Kidneys?

If whey protein is taken in increased amounts, over an extended period of time, it develops a risk of kidney disorders, including kidney stones formation. Diets that are rich in whey, can be a health concern, might impair the functions of kidneys (one of the major organs of the body and are responsible for flushing wastes).

People who completely rely on whey protein for an extended period might be at an increased risk of developing kidney disease, kidney stones and even lead to kidney failure in extreme cases.

Though there isn’t any conclusive research or evidence of excessive, long-term whey protein consumption with the deteriorating kidney functions, however many experts caution that there is a risk and encourage individuals to consume the whey protein in moderation.

Conclusion

If you are having any chronic health problems, or have questions about its correct usage, according to your body type and complications, it is important to discuss it with your health care provider or renal dietitian, before going for whey protein. Can whey protein affect your kidneys?
