What is chronic kidney disease?

Chronic kidney disease, also known as chronic renal failure, is a disease that affects the parts of the renal. It is a long term disease that results in loss of kidney function over a span of time, say years.

To understand chronic kidney disease, you need to understand the anatomy of the kidneys first.  Chronic kidney disease affects most parts of the kidneys responsible for the blood filtration process, called glomerulus and the tubules. Each kidney has nephrons to help carry out strain blood. Further, each nephron further has millions of glomeruli, which are the tiny blood vessels of the kidneys. The pressure on the vessels when it becomes high due to some damage may push some fluids to pass through them. However, this fluid that gets eliminated also has substance or waste that should be disposed of while the tubules sieve the important substances. The waste such as creatinine and urea is eliminated, while fluid that has a mixture of salts and other minerals is retained in the blood. Usually, protein is reabsorbed in the process as it is needed for the vitalization.

Apart from symptoms, there are some medical tests that can help to diagnose the functioning of the kidneys. The medical tests are carried out with the help of blood and urine tests since your kidneys filter the blood and remove the urine from the body. Of all the tests that a doctor does, GFR is considered the most crucial for measuring the output of the kidneys.

What is the Glomerular filtration rate?

GFR number or glomerular filtration rate estimates how much kidney function you are left with. It is the best way to figure out how well your kidneys are functioning.  If GFR is low, it means there is something about your kidneys that should be worked upon.

It is not measured directly with the help of a blood test rather through a mathematical formula from the level of creatinine in your blood along with your age, race, and gender.

Creatinine is a waste that your body or kidneys excrete out.   High creatinine means the kidneys are not functioning well enough for you to survive.  You cannot consider creatinine as a measure of kidney function along, but creatinine level can be used to estimate GFR.

Based on GFR are classified as the stages of CKD, as follow:

Stage 1: Healthy kidney function with GFR>=90mL/min

Stage2: GFR=60-80 mL/min

Stage 3A: GFR=45-59 mL/min

Stage 3B: GFR=30-59 mL/min

Stage 4:  GFR=15-29 mL/min

Stage 5: End-stage renal disease or ESRD with GFR <15 mL/min
